Utility Route Surveys
Utility Route Surveys involve the determination of the relief and location of natural and artificial objects along a proposed route for power line or other utility. Route surveys are also used for the proposed location of highways. We utilize conventional survey methods and aerial photogrammetry with GPS for ground control. This work involves establishing long-distance geodetic control, profiles and cross-sections, alignment for construction, right-of-way acquisition, legal descriptions, right-of-way plats and plans, and boundary surveys for required easements and condemnation, railroads, and pipelines. Consistent with these purposes, a route survey is usually broken down into reconnaissance, preliminary and final-location survey phases that satisfy, respectively, each of the purposes given above. Sometimes however, circumstances may preclude the requirement to perform all three phases. For example, if a proposed utility line is to be constructed adjacent to a major highway having well-marked vertical and horizontal control networks and up-to-date topographic maps and utility maps, then the reconnaissance and preliminary survey phases may be avoided. Aside from roads and highways, other uses of route surveys are for above-ground utility lines --most commonly power and communication lines -- and for underground utilities, such as power, communication, sewer, water, gas, and fuel lines.
